Hear real stories from four ex-popular porn performers about their time in the industry, and the abuse they witnessed or personally experienced.
“This was the lie I had been told: that in porn, for the first time in my life, I would have control over what I would or wouldn’t be asked to do sexually. I would have a say in what would happen with my body.”
The men in porn appear as though they are dominant and in control, but behind the scenes, they are often victims of the same harsh conditions and harmful situations as female performers.
“I was a fully-fledged addict. I needed drugs to get me through porn scenes. I needed drugs to numb my pain. I needed drugs to make me feel ‘happy.'”
The majority of porn consumers who participated in this study weren’t concerned about porn performer mistreatment, but those who did learn about performer mistreatment took action to combat it.
Three of the four performers were charged and taken into custody over videos available for streaming on an amateur French porn website.
Sex trafficking, abuse, and other forms of exploitation blend in with what’s mainstream and normalized in our porn-obsessed society.
“The director himself put his hands on me and was choking me. Never in a million years did I think [they] would allow it.”
According to this qualitative study interviewing women in the porn industry, many report that financial vulnerability, poor mental health, prior sexual abuse, and exploitation are common experiences of those in the industry.
This requirement provides the only way to verify and track performers’ ages and serves as a major incentive for businesses across the complex supply chain to monitor content—and now it’s gone.
“The more real my pain was, the more I cried from the depth of my depths, the more abuse I took, the more my videos were watched.”
